Fewer oncologists to be available in future

Amarillo oncologist Vance Esler gave a big sigh and took a long pause to think about the answer. What can be done to alleviate the pending national shortage of cancer doctors? Demand for cancer care is expected to increase 48 percent between now and 2020. The American Cancer Society estimates 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer in their lifetimes. Survival rates also are increasing, forcing doctors to spend more time with patients to prevent or treat recurring cases.
