DPS buys copter for areaLocal lawmen got a glimpse Thursday of a new $3.2 million tool for combating crime in the Texas Panhandle. The helicopter, purchased using seized drug money, will help with vehicle pursuits, hostage situations and missing-person cases, said DPS Tactical Flight Officer Wayne Beighle. The aircraft has a thermal-imaging camera that can be used for nighttime surveillance, while a mounted spotlight, 1,100 times brighter than an average theater spotlight, can be used for tracking criminals.
